N-Hance of Redding & Chico is the industry leader for hardwood floor refinishing and can help you restore the original beauty and shine of your hardwood flooring
One of the most common complaints we get is from customers who tried to sand their hardwood floors on their own, only to be disappointed by the results. If you have had a similar experience, here are a few tips to help you avoid more mistakes.
#1 – Using too fine a grit of sandpaper.
You might think that using fine grit sandpaper is starting out conservatively. The truth is you will probably need sandpaper that is more coarse than you might think. A 16-24 grit is a good starting point, but don’t be afraid to work your way up if you need to. This will help you get the project done faster and prevent your sandpaper from getting clogged in the machine.
#2 – Not sanding floors thoroughly enough.
Sanding wood floors is a labor-intensive task, but you never want to throw in the towel early. Sand until all patches of varnish are completely removed and you are down to just the bare wood.
#3 – Sanding in the wrong direction.
When you sand make sure that you are sanding diagonally. This will help the process go faster and give you a more even finish.
#4 – Spending too much time on the edges.
The hard-to-reach edges of your floors might be a pain to get to, but you might not actually need to sand them as much as you think. Use 120-grit sandpaper for the majority of your floors, and then 80 grit on the edges to save time.
#5 – Not changing out the sandpaper often enough.
Be sure to keep switching out your sandpaper. This will help you get the job done faster!
