Painting, like most things, requires the right tool. Plenty of people have attempted a DIY cabinet painting project thinking that there was no difference between rollers, sprayers, and brushes. Boy were they wrong, and quickly found that out. Choosing between those tools will be the key to your overall success. As the cabinet color change experts of Greenville, our team here at N-Hance is ready to help you make the correct decision.
The Roller
Rollers are amazing! In fact, for the most part our method relies heavily on rollers. They do a great job of covering a large area quickly. However, cabinets typically have little grooves, designs, and intrecate details that the roller is not going to hit properly. So as a rule of thumb, you should use your roller to cover the bulk of the area and then go back in with a small brush to get those finer details and areas worked out.
The roller should leave you with a nice, even finish. There may be a slight texture though. A lot of people make the mistake of going too slow and then trying to go over spots again after they’re already drying which will make that slight texture worse. For that reason, be sure to paint quickly and accurately.
The Sprayer
A lot of local cabinet painters use sprayers. They are quick, efficient, and typically do a good job. But you really have to know what you’re doing with it. Otherwise, you’re going to have a big, messy, uneven finish that will need to be fixed.
Sprayers require a certain amount of prep time, which is the first big issue. You need to protect your property and appliances. Failing to do this properly can result in disaster. Next, you might end up hitting some areas with more paint than others. It takes a steady hand and a well-trained eye to get it right.
If you’re willing to put in a little practice first and thoroughly prep your space, using a sprayer is a great option for a DIY project.
The Brush
Again, brushes are absolutely perfect for small details and even the inside of your cabinets. But trying to do the whole exterior, well, it’s pretty tough to get it done right with just a brush. Rollers and sprayers will be much better options for the bulk of the project, but don’t neglect using a brush for those fine detail areas.
