Each kitchen is totally unique, which means that designing one that will work well for you involves so much more than a simple copy and paste.
It’s important to work with the space you have and implement features that will truly showcase it. One of the most important design decisions you’ll make in your kitchen design is cabinet height.
The cabinet height you choose will impact the perceived height of the space. Not only that, your cabinet height also determines how much storage you have to work with.
When considering which cabinet height you should choose, start with these simple factors unique to you and your situation:
- Your personal design preferences
- The height of the ceiling in your kitchen
- If there’s crown molding and if so what kind
- How much storage space you need
From there, you can select one of the following standard options for cabinet height:
Wall Cabinets. Wall cabinets that are 30 or 36 inches are ideal for kitchens with standard 8 foot ceilings. If you have 9 foot higher ceilings or taller, go with 42 inch wall cabinets.
Upper Cabinets. If you’re fortunate to have taller ceilings, maximize storage with upper cabinets that are 48, 51, or 54 inches. These will highlight the ceiling height for a grand aesthetic and give you more storage space, too.
Short Cabinets. You can also use shorter 36 inch cabinets stacked together to create customizable storage solutions or to fill space if your kitchen has soffits or short upper cabinets.
Tall Cabinets. Elongate your space and enjoy the benefit of additional storage by utilizing 96 inch tall cabinets that stand from floor to ceiling in an 8 foot space. If you prefer some space between the top of the cabinet and the ceiling, go with an 84 inch option instead.
