Hardwood floors are not only beautiful, but they add value and warmth to your home. However, beauty does not come without a price and the price of beautiful hardwood floors comes in the form of ongoing care in order to maintain their beauty and condition. Maintaining wood floors doesn’t have to take a lot of effort, as you know the expert tricks for keeping them clean. Using these rules of thumb, you can have beautiful floors for years!
Weekly Wood Floor Cleaning
Each 2-week period, you should follow a Dust/Mop regimen where Week 1 is dusting and Week 2 is mopping. Then repeat the Dust/Mop cycle.
To dust, use a microfiber cloth or a soft mop to dust your hardwood floors. Microfiber is the most effective material for dusting as it has the ability to trap even the finest particles that, if left on the surface, can cause hairline scratches and abrasions in the wood finish. Also, brooms and vacuums, depending on the type, can scratch your hardwood finish.
To mop, spritz the floor using water or our N-Hance Wood Floor Cleaner and mop using a microfiber pad or, if you don’t have a microfiber mop, simply wrap your standard mop with a microfiber cloth and go over the entire surface in a serpentine pattern, until the surface has been covered by the mop and all applied moisture has been removed by the cloth. Avoid using too much moisture during this process as it can damage or warp your hardwood floors. Never pour water or flood the floor or use a traditional cotton mop that places too much moisture on your floor. When it comes to your hardwood floors, the more gentle you are, the better.
Bi-Annual Wood Floor Renewal
Every 2 to 5 years, you should renew the finish on your floors. We call this process a Basic Renewal. During a Basic Renewal, we thoroughly clean your floors with a mildly abrasive buffing pad. Then we apply a neutralizing sealer and recoat your floors with our famous Lightspeed UV cured finish in your choice of sheen levels from Matte to High Gloss. Renewing your finish regularly will keep your hardwood floors from ever needing to be sanded again! Plus renewing your finish can be done at a fraction of the cost of a full sanding. What’s more, is that a Basic Renewal can be done quickly and painlessly without dealing with any sanding dust and with only minimal disruption in your home.
Advanced Wood Floor Care Tips
A few things to keep in mind when it comes to your hardwood floors is to make sure you are using tools, materials, and solutions that are safe – like microfiber mops and towels that won’t scratch the surface. You also should stay away from waxy and soapy cleaning solutions, or vinegar on your hardwood floors as these can leave behind a sticky residue, cause damage, or dull your hardwood finish. Never, ever use any product that contains acrylic as it will cause harmful buildup on your floor and will need to be stripped off in order to restore the finish.
It’s also a good rule of thumb to place felt pads under all chairs and other furniture legs and carpet runners are ideal, especially in areas of high traffic.
