Interested in a different color for your cabinets? Nature is taking center stage when it comes to upcoming trends for cabinet painting in 2022.
Over the past several years, white and gray have been all the rage in cabinet painting. However, according to a recent study conducted by the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA), 2022 designs will be moving away from white and heading toward more color and warmth.
The respondents of the survey are members of the NKBA and interior designers or distributors of kitchen and bath products. The survey reported that over the next three years, 43% believe more color – specifically warmer colors – and wood tones will be more popular.
For instance, colorful cabinets with gold-tone hardware are on the rise, as are lighter stained woods that show more grain. In addition, when asked “where will designers be using BOLD colors in kitchen design in the next 3 years?” the top answer – 36% – said backsplashes, with cabinets coming in second at 31%.
Cabinet Painting Colors for 2022 and Beyond
So if you’re getting ready to paint your cabinets and want to be on-trend now and over the next few years – you are probably wondering which colors are heating up?
The most in-demand colors will be greens and blues. In fact, a whopping 39% pointed to green as the newest white, while 29% said blue is the preferred hue going forward.
Respondents reported that, in general, nature is the inspiration for many kitchen makeovers. While white will likely always be popular, they also saw neutral colors moving away from the stark and more toward the earth – in muted tones like taupe, beige and tan.

- Dutch Gray, which can complement a contemporary or traditional home with a dramatic touch of color.
- Bear Lake Blue, which is brighter and deeper than Crisp Ocean, taking inspiration from the real Bear Lake in Idaho and Utah.
- Evening Forest brings to mind a forest filled with evergreens. It’s different yet still neutral enough to go with any home’s decor.
- Willow Bark is the ideal choice if you’d like something off-white and interesting. It’s a timeless and lovely choice for warming up your kitchen, yet still sticking with a neutral.
Some of our other more neutral options for painting your cabinets include Pure White, Arctic Wind, Cream Lily, and Soothing Gray. For more drama, Navy Stone, Dense Gray, and Top Hat Black all fit the bill.

Factors like the amount of light you get, the size of your kitchen, the number of cabinets you have, and the layout of the space all play a part in our recommendations for cabinet painting. You can even have your island’s cabinets painted one color and the balance of your cabinets painted a more neutral tone. To help you decide, we will bring samples into your home, so there’s no guessing when it comes to your final choice.
Other Ways to Incorporate Color Into Your Kitchen
Not quite ready to paint your kitchen cabinets green or blue? You can still use these as accent colors to warm up your space.
For instance, if you opt for white cabinets, then consider painting your walls green or blue or choose a new backsplash tile that is nature-inspired. You can also shop around for artwork that brings the outdoors inside and infuses your kitchen with color. Other areas to consider adding color include fabric accents, such as seating and drapery, vent hoods, and countertops.
If you have hardwood cabinets that are in good condition and are considering staining them instead, we can help there as well. At N-Hance, we offer 12 stains to choose from on our palette or can match a stain sample you bring us.
Whatever tone you decide, we can bring out the beauty and luster of your original cabinets, restoring warmth to your kitchen. You’ll still be on-trend with kitchen cabinets that are natural, rustic, and wood-toned.
