Last week, we covered common mistakes that happen all too often when painting kitchen cabinets. Many homeowners underestimate the time and effort involved in painting kitchen cabinets. Mistakes are easy to make in every step of the process – prepping, sanding, painting, priming, and re-hanging.
If you make any of the mistakes we covered last week, it can derail your project and lead to a space you don’t love. This can be devastating after all the hard work and endless hours you spent on the job, and inconvenience and disruption to your family.
So, how can you fix issues and get back on track with your kitchen cabinet painting project? Here are some tips to help you.
- Setting up. Set up an area where you can re-sand and re-paint without sand particles and fumes getting into your home, exposing your family to harsh irritants and making clean-up more complicated.
- Prepping. Remove the cabinet doors and drawer fronts that need fixing and place them in your dedicated kitchen cabinet painting area. Invest in a drying rack that lets you safely set aside each door for drying.
- Organizing. Be sure to use a small baggie to store all the hardware, such as hinges and screws, so they don’t get lost, and also number your drawer fronts and doors, so re-hanging is easy. You’ll save a lot of time when you’re organized.
- Cleaning. Clean each door, drawer front, and the cabinet box that needs fixing with dish soap and water. Make sure each one is completely dry before you move on.
- Sanding. Sand over your cabinets with rough-grit sandpaper to start and then go over it again with different grit sandpaper several times until you have a smooth surface.
- Vacuuming. Use a shop vac with an upholstery brush to suck up all the dust particles on the surfaces and inside your cabinets and then wipe everything down again with soap and water.
- Priming. Don’t skip primer this time. Apply a thin layer of a primer engineered for cabinets, so the paint will adhere properly and hold its shine longer.
- Painting. Use a sprayer to paint the larger surface areas and then a brush or roller to get into corners and crevices. Avoid a thick coating, which can cause drip marks and other flaws that look sloppy.
- Drying. When it comes to dry time, follow the directions precisely on the products before you re-install your cabinet doors and drawer fronts.
If there are just a few spots that are sloppy or need to be fixed, then you might want to simply spot touch those. You can do that by wiping a little bit of paint over the area and working to blend it into it. If, however, this doesn’t work, then your best bet is to start from scratch and repainting each of those cabinets again.
