Getting ready for painting your kitchen cabinets? The first step is to clear out the old before you can welcome the new. You have to pack up your kitchen and all the contents of your cabinets, as well as remove the clutter from countertops.
To make this time-consuming to-do a little easier, here are 8 tips to follow
#1: Figure Out Storage.
There’s more inside your cabinets than you think. That’s why figuring out where to store your dishes, glassware, silverware, pots and pans, Tupperware, and all the other items – ahead of time – is key. If you’re lucky, you’ll have a giant dining room table where you can simply relocate everything. If not, you’ll have to think about where everything can go, so nothing is in the way of the kitchen cabinet painting job.
#2: Think Paper & Plastic.
Rather than trying to dig around in boxes for silverware and plates, invest in disposable products, like plastic cups and paper plates. This way, you can simply toss them away when you’re done eating and skip the dishwashing. Before your kitchen cabinet painting begins, stock up on everything you’ll need for the duration of the project.
#3: Purchase Packing Supplies.
When it comes to ceramics and glassware, you don’t want these items to break as you’re moving them or during the kitchen cabinet repainting process. So invest in boxes, bubble wrap or newspaper, markers for labeling, and packing tape to keep your belongings safe.
You can even use paper plates and layer them in between your ceramic plates to keep them secure. You’ll likely need several boxes to store everything in, depending on the size of your kitchen and the number of cabinets.
#4: Keep the Silverware Drawer In Tact.
The easiest way to deal with the large, unwieldy silverware drawer is to keep the utensils in the tray organizer and wrap it with plastic wrap. This will cover and protect all your forks, knives, and spoons and makes it easy to simply place back in the drawer when the work is done. If you have a smaller silverware organizer, you can even use a gallon-size plastic bag.
#5: Fill Up Empty Spots.
If you have an item like a large bowl or a slow cooker, fill the inside with other items as a way to pack more efficiently. For instance, place wooden spoons and prep knives inside a slow cooker, or spices from your spice cabinet inside an oversized bowl. Then tape your slow cooker closed, or use plastic wrap to cover the bowl.
#6: Clean Off Countertops.
If you have artwork or other decorative items, you can wrap and pack them away with your breakable dishes, plates, and glasses. However, if you have items that you use regularly, like your coffee maker or toaster, you want to be able to reach them. So relocate them to a place you can access during the kitchen cabinet repainting project, like the dining room or even your bedroom.
#7: Don’t Forget About Floors.
Besides the stuff inside and on top of your cabinets, you should also remove everything from the floors. This will protect these items from paint splatter or tripping up kitchen cabinet painters as they are working.
For instance, relocate your pet’s food and water dishes to an area where they can still easily reach them, but they’re not in the flow of foot traffic. The same goes for garbage and recycle bins, area rugs, kitchen island stools, and anything else in the way.
#8: Set Up a Temporary Kitchen.
Before the cabinet painting begins, you’ll want an area that can serve as a temporary kitchen. This will be where you make meals during the project. If you have a space planned out and prepared ahead of time, it will be easier and less stressful for you and your family.
If it’s still nice outdoors in your area, this can even be a table outside where you prepare meals next to the grill. If it’s inside, place your microwave in an easily accessible place with some extra room for prep and serving.
You can also use your bathroom sink as the kitchen sink temporarily. Make sure there is dish soap, sponges or washcloths, and towels for drying.
